Why do some students just love practicing guitar?

When you look at Li-sa-X for example its obvious she practices for many hours a day and loves doing it but why? Basically there is a connection between the practice of anything you care to name and an eventual love of the thing being practiced. There is this point where we tip and the love affair begins. We all have a general tendency to do more of something we are good at but the hard part of course, is getting good in the first place.

The irony of practice

Getting good takes a serious effort which is where the problem lies for most people. In short, most successful people have a period of high level intensive practice for whatever reason that gets them to that tipping point. It might be forced (think of the military) or due to circumstances (think of the Kenyan distance runners who have to jog 25km a day to school and back as kids) or a period of high sustain motivation (the person who becomes obsessed with a hero as we often see in sport). I have read and seen this theme again and again and the story is almost always the same. A relatively short period of high level sustained practice that results in a long term love for their craft. Hendrix, Van Halen, Vai, Satriani and probably any guitarist you care to mention went through a period of intensive practice that became of tipping point for their guitar playing.

So how do you get started?

Its really very simple. You need to find a way to sustain practice at a high level for long enough to reach that tipping point. I assure you that every good guitarist reaches that point in one way or another. Motivation is generally the easiest way but if like most people you choose to plod along practicing 10 mins a few times a week it simply won’t happen. Sure you can start small (10 mins a day) to get in the practice routine but, for the love affair to kick in you’ll need to do 30 mins a day and to be a guitar hero you’ll probably need to be doing 2 to 4 hours a day. The beauty of this is you are in control. You get to decide what kind of guitarist you’ll become. Being a great guitar player comes from massive amounts of practice. Massive amounts of practice are only sustainable if you love what you do. To love what you do you need to put in a period of high level practice.
